Sometimes I’m the (loving) bearer of bad news… 🙂

Here’s what I say to many, many of our clients and students who want to turn their yearly revenues into their monthly revenues. Ready?

“Your business cannot grow if you keep doing everything yourself.”

(The response? You choose: Ouch or Duh.)

Listen, I know it can be hard. It’s actually quite an emotional process to learn to let go and delegate. Believe me, I have experienced the “There’s no way anyone else will do it as well as I can” thing.

You see, you had to be a “control enthusiast” to get your business to this level. But now, “letting go” is required. And that can be very difficult because it’s hard to trust that it will be done and done well, to our standards.

There’s another side to this coin, though. Watch this week’s training video to learn how you will know that it’s time to delegate in your business, and more importantly, what to delegate, now:

It is a beautiful thing to learn that there are people who have a zone of excellence in the areas where you are merely competent (or even incompetent)!

Listen, we all have our gifts, strengths and talents.

None of us can be good at everything and none of us (at least those of us who want to grow) can go it alone.

Remember… Your incompetence IS someone else’s Unique Brilliance. And when you let go of needing to do it all yourself (like a control enthusiast) and needing to improve your weaknesses (instead of harnessing your strengths) your business can and will thrive.

It’s a mindset as much as a strategy.

So this week, I invite you to think about the functional areas in your business that fall in your zone of competence or incompetence (rather than excellence or brilliance) that you can hire someone else to do…

Here are some ideas for you:

  • Your email and scheduling appointments
  • Your social media posting and content
  • Bookkeeping
  • Maybe even your Customer Service?

When you do, you have time for more MGAs (Money Generating Activities), which means that you make so much more money and those you hired just paid for themselves.

So, tell me on the blog: what is it in your business that needs to be delegated so you can focus on Money Generating Activities? What will you be brave enough to let go of soon?  

This is the first step in scaling and leveraging your zone of genius. And that, my friend, is the path to entrepreneurial success and exponential growth.

When talking about what they do for clients, most people end up talking about the PROCESS of what they do, not what they really DO for clients, both in speaking to them and in written communication to them, i.e. their marketing materials. There’s a huge distinction there, and that distinction is costing them (and perhaps even you) lots of potential new clients.

When talking about their business, many professionals make the mistake of describing exactly what they do, in boring detail. “My company has been in business for X number of years and we use the newest technology systems. We use a complicated series of… blah blah blah.”

Hate to say this, but… SO WHAT! Nobody cares!

When I hear someone talk to prospects this way, it sends up a big red flag for me: these people don’t really know what they DO for clients and they’re losing potential clients every time they open their mouths and every time someone reads their materials! The problem is that they’re clearly not connected enough to their client base to see what honest-togoodness benefits they bring their clients.

There’s a saying that goes “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” And until you can tell someone what’s in it for THEM to work with you, they won’t pay attention to you or what you’re saying.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with you if you’ve been doing this wrong, but it’s something that you’ll want to work on quickly so you don’t let any more prospective clients slip through your fingers. It just takes asking yourself what you really DO for clients, what results and benefits you get for them and then to articulate that so that a prospective client looking for that particular problem will want to work with you.

Real client attraction is based on creating client-centered marketing and messages. You may have heard of the phrase “features vs. benefits” but have never really known what they mean or how to apply them to you business to get clients. We’ll do this now.

An example of a product’s FEATURE is its color, shape, size, usage or capacity, etc.

An example of a BENEFIT or a RESULT is what it does for you—its solution. It helps you lose weight, makes you more money, saves you more money, makes you happier, helps you attract clients, helps you grow your hair back, solves your particular frustration or ends that chronic health concern you’ve been dealing with. This is what you want to focus on when describing what you really DO for clients, not what you think you do.

Your Client Attraction Assignment:

Write out the specific and numerous benefits, results and solutions clients receive when using your services. At the end of the day, what do you really DO for your clients? What are the results and benefits you bring to them? What do they walk away with? Make a list of all the tangible results and measurable benefits people get from working with you.

Think: “What do I really do for them in the end?” and “What’s REALLY in it for them?” If you don’t know what that is, ask your current and former clients, “What have I done for you? What specific and tangible results have you gotten from our work?” They’ll tell you, in a language that OTHER prospective clients will understand.

Then create a series of statements from these benefits and solutions simple enough for a 6-year old child to understand and repeat.

Then combine them into a captivating 3 or 4-sentence statement that you’ll use in all your marketing communications and every time you meet someone new.

Now, if you’re just starting out and trying to fill your practice in the FIRST place, then follow a step-by-step system that feels easy and authentic to you. It’s a phenomenon that happens to most people in business for themselves after a few years. When solo-entrepreneurs first get started in marketing their business, they have gusto, they have energy, and many take a no-excuses approach to getting clients. They’re WILLING to do what it takes, and they do it often (most of them).

But after a few years, they begin to rest on their laurels, they get lazy, and after a while, they stop doing what they used to do to get clients. Some stop networking; some stop doing free intro classes, either in person or over the phone; some no longer do as much speaking as they used to. They’ve slowed down their marketing, and then they wonder what’s happened to their pipeline: it’s empty.

Oh, and I hear a whole bunch of excuses as to why they’re no longer doing these things, too. There’s always a YEAH-BUT… “I don’t FEEL like doing that anymore,” or “I’ve already done that, it won’t work again,” or even “I’m tired, I don’t want to work that hard.” Some even begin to wonder if they should stay self-employed, ready to give up.

As a result of the excuses, the well continues to dry up and they find themselves digging the well when they’re thirsty (Not fun: it creates sleepless nights and financial troubles.) Then, the fear sets in and they scramble for NEW things to do. Ever done that?

It seems they want to reinvent the wheel. They’re looking for new ways of doing things and this creates a sometimes frenetic, frantic approach to getting clients. I believe this ties into the “Bright Shiny Object Syndrome” we talked about recently, always looking for something new to do, something exciting, while leaving behind the proven stuff.

However, what I’ve learned over the years is, doing something new doesn’t always create results as quickly. The systems aren’t as easy to put in place and there’s always a learning curve for new stuff. What clients are surprised to hear is that, instead of creating BRAND new strategies, sometimes, we begin by going back to doing the tried-and-true, proven things that worked very well for us in the past. We go back to the basics: Marketing Pie 101.

Why reinvent the wheel when you can go back and do the simple things that are proven to work?

Your Client Attraction Assignment:

My thoughts on this: You either have EXCUSES or you have RESULTS.

So, my questions for you are:

  • What have you been UNWILLING to do recently to get clients that USED to work for you?
  • Have you stopped doing something that you did regularly in the beginning?
  • Where have you gotten lazy?
  • What used to work for you in the early days?
  • Are you doing this now?
  • Are you WILLING to do this now?

If now’s the time for you to ramp up your client load, then stop everything and take a look at your Marketing Pie. Which slices of the pie are you implementing regularly? Are you not being consistent with your marketing?

It’s time to go back to the basics. And, it’s time to recommit.The funny thing is, when you recommit and you start doing these things again, they WORK. And what happens is, you start getting clients, more mo’ney starts pouring in, and you begin to LIKE doing these things again. Marketing becomes FUN again. Your whole demeanor changes. And, you instantly become more Client Attractive as a result. THEN, once the foundation is in, you can start adding in all the new stuff. Try it. It always works for me and my clients.

After years of putting to use all the useful marketing tips I’ve provided as part of my Client Attraction System, you can imagine that many people call to see what it takes to work with me privately and most everyone over the years had questions about my products and services.

In the beginning, I was spending countless hours per month explaining to prospective clients how I got to be a Client Attraction expert, what the steps of the Client Attraction System were, what results they could expect, what the different programs and rates were, and all the other details of what I offered.

At first, it was exciting and validating because it showed me that what I was doing to market my practice was actually WORKING! But then, after a few years, I began to feel like a broken record and found that I was spending a lot of extra time saying these things over and over again, time that could have been spent marketing and getting more clients.

So I created a page of Frequently Asked Questions in the form of an “Interview,” and now I direct all prospective clients to read the “Interview with Fabienne” page of my website (www.ClientAttraction.com) BEFORE they call me and this works like a charm. Years ago, a prospective client called and said “Hi, I met you at one of your seminars, I visited your website and I know I want to work with you. I’d like the Fast Track program and I’d like to start next week. What day can we start?”

Cool, right? And the best part is that I didn’t have to sell her or push hard to get her as a client. She did it on her own and called me on her own.!

Social media and networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are receiving lots of attention as tools for Client Attraction – and it’s easy to spend a lot of (wasted) time there. To attract ideal high paying clients from social media, it’s important to remember that that the same rules apply for social media as they do for traditional marketing: giving value, building relationships!

At the core, Client Attraction is about PULLING clients in with a compelling message and creating such high-content information that adds value to your audience that it motivates them to take further action into working with you. And the same applies with social media.

So, when using social media, you want to be clear on how you can tap into this new marketing strategy and still remain “Client Attractive.” Here are some strategies for doing so:

  1. Have a clear objective and develop a strategy. Due to the popularity of sites like Facebook and Twitter – it’s easy to get sucked into the “bright shiny object syndrome” and immediately jump in 100% by using these tools as a way to market your business and attract clients. But, you can’t just dive right in because “everyone else is doing it.” You need to have an objective. Is it to build your list? Attract more clients? Position yourself in the marketplace with more prospects and potential joint venture partners? What call-to-action or response do you want to achieve with each interaction with social media? Get clear on your end result first – then develop the plan.
  2. Focus on the long-term relationship. Client Attraction is not at all about the “churn and burn” approach to building relationships – and it’s no different with social media. It takes time to cultivate relationships with prospects before they become clients. Prospects through social media still want to know you and like you and ultimately trust you before they decide to work with you or buy your product. Through the power of social media you can deepen that connection and build the bond with the person you’re relating with. You can accelerate that relationship or expand your reach with the amazing “connectivity” that social media provides – but you must remain focused on that relationship and connection you build over time in order to remain client attractive.

  3. It’s not about you, it’s about them. Because literally anyone can tap into connections through social media – you need to be extra client attractive and stand out from the crowd. To “cut through the clutter” and ensure your message and your connection remains on the top of the radar with your potential clients, it’s important to focus on giving before you expect to get anything in return. Deliver the same ‘high-value’ and ‘high-content’ information that you do in your articles, emails and on your website. Social media is no different. Show your connections you add even MORE value and your prospects will be attracted to you.

  4. Be authentic, real and transparent. In case you haven’t noticed a theme here, it’s this: Social media is all about connection. People want to connect with you in so many ways like they would in real-life. Be who you are on Facebook and Twitter as you would be face-to-face. Even though it’s online, people can still see through the “fake” of social media just like they could if they meet someone in person. The more you “show up” as the real you in social media – the more people will want to connect with you and be interested in building that relationship even further. Have integrity with everything you do with social media. Remember this: Never post anything through social media that you wouldn’t want blasted on a highway billboard or the front page of the New York Times for the entire world to see.

  5. Social media is all about the conversation – happening online. If you’re not showing up and contributing to the conversation that is taking place – you’ll never leverage the true power of social media and build a client attractive business. It’s not a one-sided conversation where you just continually promote yourself and not engage with anyone in your network. Social media and networking is no different than in-person networking. It’s a two-way conversation for you AND the other person – that’s what creates the value. When you contribute and collaborate with your audience, they will respect you and be more attracted to you.

  6. Be consistent and plan your time. Social media could suck you in and drain all your time very easily and quickly. Before you know it – you’ve spent half the day on Facebook and Twitter and you’ve not added one person to your list or engaged any new potential prospects, let alone gotten any “real” work done. Develop a daily and weekly plan where you identify how much time you will spend on the platforms and what result you want to achieve. It’s like any other slice in the Client Attraction Marketing Pie – you can’t just put in half the effort and expect the full result. Show up consistently and contribute consistently to realize the long-term benefit.

Remember this: You don’t attract clients FROM social media. You attract clients THROUGH social media. It’s from the connections you establish and the long-term value you provide those individuals that cultivate the relationship and as a result, they see you as Client Attractive. Focus on that and you’ll never be without clients, again.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

The first step in developing social media as part of your Client Attraction marketing strategy is identify your overall objective and then work backwards with the detailed plan. What is your desired end result? For example, if it’s to build your list – then you want to develop a step-by-step strategy that allows you to engage your network with the intent to attract people back to your website where they can get your irresistible free offer and join your list.

The second step is to identify the tools and platforms that work best for you. Twitter might be extremely popular out there, but does your market actually exist in big numbers on Twitter? Perhaps they are more gathered in a social networking site like LinkedIn. Spend some time on these various platforms and determine which works best for you and your niche.

The last step is to show up and do the work. Social media as a client attraction strategy does take some personal time and effort. You can’t just setup a profile and update your status and then ask, “Where are the clients?” You need to step up and contribute to the conversation with valuable content on a consistent basis to attract the clients you want through social media.
